PMHNP Credentialing

Best PMHNP Credentialing Services (2026 Guide)

There are four models for PMHNP credentialing, and there isn’t one best choice for everyone. Marketplaces like Alma, Grow Therapy and SonderMind credential you under their own contracts. Grow and SonderMind list no provider fee, and Alma’s membership is $95 a month billed annually. Billing companies bundle it with billing, flat-fee firms charge by the payer or the provider, and behavioral health specialists like us run it to an effective date in your name. What separates them is whose name ends up on the payer contract.

How This Comparison Works

We wrote this page, and we’re one of the companies compared. Every fact about another company comes from that company’s own website, linked where we cite it, and we last checked every entry on October 4, 2026. Nobody gets ranked or scored. If you’re looking for general mental health credentialing rather than PMHNP-specific help, start with our comparison of credentialing services for therapists, psychologists and group practices or our credentialing services for mental health providers.

We sell PMHNP credentialing services, so read our entry the way you’d read any vendor writing about its own category. Hold it to the same three questions as everyone else here. What does it cost? What’s included? Who is it wrong for? We publish our pricing, and we’ll tell you plainly who we’re not right for. If you need patient volume handed to you, a marketplace does that and we don’t.

There’s no single “best” credentialing service for every PMHNP. There are four distinct models, and the right one depends on your cash position, your growth plans and how much you care about owning your payer contracts.

The Four Models, Compared

Marketplaces: Alma, Grow Therapy, SonderMind

They credential you onto their own contracts, and you bill insurance through them. Grow Therapy pays you the rate on your rate sheet, which is based on Grow’s contracted rate with each payer. SonderMind lists you under its Tax ID and group NPI. Alma charges a membership of $95 a month, billed at $1,140 a year, and credentials members under Alma’s Tax ID. For a cash-constrained solo, it’s the fastest path to insurance patients, with referral flow and built-in billing on top. But the contracts are theirs. You get limited say over panels and rates, and the per-session economics compound every month you stay.

Billing-Company Bundles: TheraThink And Similar

Mental health billing companies that add credentialing at a low flat fee. TheraThink publishes $140 per commercial panel and $270 each for Medicare and Medicaid, and its billing runs 6.5% to 8% of the contracted rate or allowed amount on paid claims. It’s efficient if you want billing and credentialing from one vendor and their billing percentage suits your volume. Ask whether the credentialing fee covers follow-up with each payer through approval, or ends when the application goes in.

Dedicated Credentialing Firms: Credex Healthcare, Medwave, National Generalists

Firms that credential many specialties, from physicians and dental to behavioral health. Neither Credex nor Medwave prints its own price. Medwave quotes per provider, per insurance company, and Credex gives a custom quote. Their own cost guides put typical fees at $200 to $500 per payer for a single provider (Credex) and $100 to $300 per provider, per payer (Medwave). What’s worth probing is behavioral health depth. Do they know the psychiatric payers in your state, which panels are functionally closed, which Medicaid plans matter and how Optum Behavioral Health behaves? Or are they running a generic checklist?

Behavioral Health Specialist Operators: AdvanceAPractice

That’s us. We work in psychiatry, PMHNP and psychology, and our published pricing depends on your situation. Payer Transition is $2,500 per provider to move an already-participating provider’s contracts to a new practice or Tax ID, New Provider Credentialing is $3,000 for a provider joining a clinic that already holds executed contracts with the selected payers, and Direct Payer Contracting is $3,500 for contracts in your own practice’s name. Each covers five commercial payers, so that’s $500, $600 or $700 per payer, and you can start with one payer. Group discounts are 10% for 2 to 4 providers, 15% for 5 to 9 and 20% for 10. Additional commercial payers are $350 each, and Medicare or Medicaid enrollment is $500 each. Larger or more complex work gets a written scope after a Fit Call. The difference is what surrounds credentialing. Managed payer follow-up comes standard, and we bring revenue cycle, workflow and operations depth for practices that plan to grow. We’re wrong for you if you want a caseload filled for you, or if you only want the cheapest possible application submission.

Credentialing Companies For Nurse Practitioners

These companies name nurse practitioners or PMHNPs on their own sites. An NP file usually carries paperwork other licenses don’t, like a collaborative agreement in states that require one and a DEA registration if you’ll prescribe controlled substances, so ask each company how it handles yours.

Which One Should You Pick? A Decision Framework

  • “I need income in weeks and have no referral stream.” Marketplace. The per-session economics cost more over time, but nothing else gets a solo PMHNP seeing insurance patients faster. Many providers start here and credential independently later. Just know the panel spots stay with the platform when you go.
  • “I have some runway and want one vendor to handle billing and enrollment.” A billing-company bundle. Compare the billing percentage against your projected volume. Then ask exactly what happens when an application stalls. Who follows up, how often, and at what cost?
  • “I just need X payers done at a flat fee, and I’ll manage the rest.” A dedicated credentialing firm. Ask about their behavioral health experience in your state, whether the quoted price includes follow-up through approval, and how they handle rejections.
  • “I’m building a practice, maybe a group, and want the contracts, the panel strategy and the operations built right.” A behavioral health expert like us. We cost more than an application mill, and we won’t fill your caseload the way a marketplace does. What you get is contracts you own, managed follow-up through approval, and an operator who has run the downstream billing and workflow those contracts feed. Common Questions

Can I Use A Marketplace And Get Credentialed Independently At The Same Time?

Often, yes. Many PMHNPs see marketplace patients for cash flow while their independent applications process, then shift over. Check each platform’s terms and each payer’s rules about duplicate enrollment paths, and plan the transition so you don’t strand patients mid-switch.

Is Free Marketplace Credentialing Really Free?

The credentialing work really is unbilled. The platform makes its money on the back end, through the spread between payer reimbursement and your payout or through a membership fee. And the contracts belong to the platform. Whether that trade is good for you depends on your volume and how long you stay.

What Should I Ask Any Credentialing Company Before Signing?

Ask five questions. Is follow-up through approval included, or just submission? Who fixes rejections, and at what cost? How many behavioral health providers have you credentialed in my state? How do you handle CAQH/DataSpring alignment? And what’s the full price in writing, per payer, per provider and monthly?

How Long Does Credentialing Take Through A Service?

Commercial panels typically run 60 to 120 days, and no service changes payer processing times. What a good service changes is everything around that clock. Clean first-pass submissions, no unnoticed stalls and no restarts from rejected files are routinely the difference between 90 days and 180.
