PMHNP Practice Requirements In Ohio: Scope, Prescribing & Collaboration

Short answer: AANP lists Ohio as reduced practice, so a PMHNP practices and prescribes under a standard care arrangement with a collaborating physician, and that physician may collaborate with no more than five prescribing APRNs at a time (ORC 4723.431(A)(1)). Schedule II prescribing is open from an outpatient behavioral health practice that employs your collaborating physician; elsewhere off the statute’s list, Schedule II is limited to terminal patients, physician initiated, 72 hours at a time (ORC 4723.481(C)).

Regulator	Ohio Board of Nursing. It licenses APRNs, grants prescriptive authority, receives your collaborating physician notices within 30 days, and may review your standard care arrangement at any time (ORC 4723.431).

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) currently classifies Ohio as a reduced practice state. In practice, a PMHNP in Ohio works under a required collaborative relationship with a physician for at least some elements of practice, and it’s most commonly documented as a standard care arrangement.

Ohio NPs who meet the state’s requirements can be granted prescriptive authority, and it can extend to controlled substances once the conditions are met. You’ll also need a separate federal DEA registration to prescribe them, and some substances carry additional conditions. Can A PMHNP Practice Independently In Ohio?

No. Ohio lets a certified nurse practitioner practice only under a standard care arrangement with a collaborating physician, and the arrangement has no expiration tied to hours or years of experience (ORC 4723.431(A)). AANP counts that as a career long collaborative requirement, which is why Ohio sits in the reduced practice group rather than full practice.

Do I Need A Collaborating Physician In Ohio?

Yes. You need a signed standard care arrangement with each physician you collaborate with before you provide care, and you report every collaborator’s name and business address to the Board within 30 days of starting and within 30 days of any change (ORC 4723.431(A)(1)). The rule sets the contents: scope, prescribing parameters, quality assurance, referral criteria, chart review and emergency coverage (OAC 4723-8-04(D)). One physician can collaborate with at most five prescribing APRNs at a time, so confirm your physician has room.

Can A PMHNP Prescribe Adderall In Ohio?

It depends on where you prescribe from. From an outpatient behavioral health practice that employs at least one physician you collaborate with under your standard care arrangement, or a physician owned practice where you collaborate with an owner who practices there, Schedule II stimulants are allowed (ORC 4723.481(C)(2)(m), (n)). From any location not on that list, Schedule II is limited to a terminal patient, started by a physician, 72 hours at a time, and a convenience care clinic can’t issue Schedule II at all (ORC 4723.481(C)(1), (C)(3)).
